St. John the Baptist Catholic Church

In 1841, a Catholic missionary priest traveled from Baltimore to a Southern York County town not yet established (later to be named New Freedom).
During his visits, a German immigrant farmer Meinrad Muller, offered the use of his home to the priest named John Neumann (later St. John Neumann),
who visited the small town. Although there is no recorded evidence, it is believed that Fr. Neumann initiated the plans for the building of our first church.
Circa 1842, a small wooden church was erected.

The church was dedicated to St. John the Baptist, who had similarly preached in the wilderness of the coming God.

In 1904, the brick church (shown above) was built and dedicated.

By 1985, there were 850 families registered at St. John's. The present church (shown
at top of page), which holds up to 900 people, was completed in March 1989 and was dedicated and blessed by Archbishop William Keeler on June 11, 1989.
